November 8: It was a beautiful sunny day. Perfect for a starting day of frostbing, but at the end the wind died and the die-hards took about an hour to finish the last race. Yes, it was shifty and puffy at times, but the big influence on the racing was the barelling current that, at times, had us looking for our anchors. There were thirteen racers with more to come next week. We should hit 20 early in the season.

November 15: There were the same number of racers, but for every one we gained, we lost one, so we ended with 13 again. We've seen 17 different people and at least 4-5 that haven't made their first outing yet, so 20 boats is certainly possible. Today was painfully light with the wind starting from the west and then switching east for the second race. You couldn't say there were noticeable shifts, it was so light. You just had to keep your boat moving. It could not have reached 5 knots all afternoon, but Hans and co. still managed six races.

November 22: Finally some wind. It was reasonably consistent from the NE and we had the same weather mark for all seven races (an unusual occurrence). The shifts were moderate, and people could be seen bailing their boats, even though there were no capsizals. The wind was in the 10-15 knot range. Morgan won the consistency prize and the win for the day.

November 29: Great frostbiting day. The wind was 5-12 out of the SW. Gusty and shifty, especially up near shore where the RC put the weather mark. We used the same weather for all races with a variety of other marks. Ted turned out for his first race and immediately proceeded to flip and go in. Bob also flipped and his new boat floated, but the stern went to the bottom. Skip figured it all out the best and won the day. Next week is Guilford for the Worlds!

December 27: It was a warm day (45?) and the wind was out of the south. But there were lulls and puffs (5-15) and shifts (20 degrees) that made it very challenging. If you missed one or the other, you could get to the back of the pack in a hurry. Chuck and Mark were RC and there was a small group of eight in attendance. Why do all the good ones come out?

New Year's Day: There was a couple of inches of snow on the ground from yesterday and there was a bit of a nip in the air, but very little breeze. So little, in fact, that we only got one race in for the Hangover Bowl. The breeze was 2-3 knots, and shifted from the east to the north during the afternoon. After the first race we ran a few "fun races". Skip tested his "Sea Dog Extractor" by sinking his boat and then pulling it up on the rig (upside down 420 rig on the Queen). It worked better than expected, but still needs a ratchet block and a little stiffening for the mast. Commo Chuck won the only race, with Gordon second and Morgan third. The seventeen boats constituted a season high.

January 10: Skip and Mark had RC duty for this very cold (20's) day. The wind was fairly steady averaging 10-12 out of the NE. Skip ran mostly WL races to port with a triangle thrown in for variety. Peter had the best consistency with the first race being his worst at 3. Gordon was second five points back and Paul had a third on the day. Yours truly went in during the sixth race with a broken pintle (not to mention the rigging problems and trying to bail his boat with a brick (frozen sponge)).

January 17: The early birds went out into the harbor with thin floating ice, and almost no wind out of the north. By the time the racing started at 1 p.m. the wind had shifted to the east, picked up a bit, and was fairly steady. Let's call it 5-10 ENE. Peter was on RC duty and called the first race to the gong and return. Mark won this one and race two as well. Morgan won race 3, Paul 5, and Gary 4 and 6. Been awhile since four people won races on a given Sunday. After the racing there were some interesting discussions on vastly different techniques for dealing with puffs. For the day, Morgan edged out Paul by one point.

January 24: Much like last week, the breeze was very manageable. Not so light that you wondered if ou would ever finish, but not so heavy that you had to hike much. Let's again call it 5-10, ESE and steady. It was a matter of finding the puffs today, as there was little shiftiness to go ahead on. Kyle helped Mark on RC and gave us our first downwind start of the season. Predictably, the boats all arrived at the leeward mark together and there was much fooforah. Not a good test of sailing skills (IMHO). We had five winners today, but Peter won three and the day with 20 points. Morgan was second and Mark VN was third.

January 31: Could I say it was a perfect frostbiting day? The temps were low (28 degrees), the sun was shining, and the wind was blowing with the puffiness and shiftiness we have come to expect. Generally, the wind was WNW in the 4-12 range with shifts of 10-20 degrees. I missed the first race, but we had six races with five different winners (do I sense a pattern developing?). Peter won the tiebreaker over Gordon with Joe in third. Newbie Patrick Gavin Byrnes was sailing Kyle's boat with Morgan's sails and had a flip for his efforts. Not sure who gets credit.

February 28: Finally, after too much wind for three weeks in a row, we got a beautiful frostbiting day. We had an average of 8-10 from the north-ish. The skies were overcast, but the temps were in the 40s. Mark and Gary piloted the Queen and ran the races. There were a variety of courses in seven races, from simple WL to Gold Cup to twice arounds -- all port roundings. There were significant shifts that could catapult new boats into the lead. As an example, I was last going around the first mark in the fifth race, caught a left shift from the left on the second lap, rounded third, and then passed the last two boats on the final beat to the finish. Not often that happens! Peter won (again) with Gordon winning a tie breaker with Paul for second.

March 7: The sun was shining, the temps were in the mid-50s and there was wind. What more could a frostbiter ask for? The wind was generally out of the west with occasional veers to the north and backs to the south, and puffs and lulls, but mostly in the 10-12 range. Nelson and Mark ran the races from the WYC dock because the stickers had not yet arrived for the Queen. Because of the wind direction, this worked fine with five WL races and an around-the-island. Ike swamped in the last WL out to the speed buoy at the harbor entrance. Peter won the tiebreaker from Morgan with Gary holding onto third for the day.

Hans was back on the RC boat with Mark and Nick. It was a great sailing day with winds in the 6-8 knot range starting northeast then moving east and then to the southeast. We completed seven races ant then tried some team racing after that. Skip was the overall winner wining five of the seven races. Following in second and third were Chuck and Morgan.
