November 12: You might say we got off to a slow start. We had only seven racers and the wind for the most part was non-existant. But Hans got it going on time at 1 p.m. and by the appointed time of 3:30 we had finished five short races. The wind was mostly from South East-ish as predicted, but instead of 15-20 it was 0-2 knots. We even had a shower mixed in there. Chuck edged out Peter with Neil a close third. Please check the definitions of the Spring and Fall Series and the Scoring System. They've changed.

November 19: More sailors and more wind made for great sailing. The ProJo predicted 8-16 from the North this morning. It was more like 8-10 from the North. The wind was relatively steady and it was good sailing. We got in six races before the appointed stopping time of 3:30. Gordon Fletcher picked up four bullets and Peter Greene the other two, but Peter won the day by a single point. Nelson, in a reversal of fortune from last week and with a new sail, picked up third place on the day with a couple of deuces and a couple of treys. Tim won distinguished honors by getting his mast caught in the gong in the last race. He had to jump up on the gong to free himself while five boats sailed by him.

November 26: It was a little gustier than last week and not quite so steady. The ProJo said 4-8 knots, but it was more like 6-12 from the South. We had fourteen racers and we started the day with an "around Cornelius Island" while the tide was high. Then it was a variety of courses ending with the one that goes out to the Bell and finishes at the club. We finished before 3 p.m. Chuck edged out Tim by a point for the day and did it without winning a single race.

December 3: We had 18 boats on the line for the first race and several still missing. If everybody shows up at once we will have more than 20. If you know of boats available, see Chuck. Today the wind prediction was 6-12 from the SW. The variability in both pressure and direction was considerable, with winds near zero and puffing up to every bit of 12 in gusts. The direction seemed to be between E and S. Peter had three bullets and won the day over Chuck (10 back) and Bob (13 back). If you weren't on the front line at the start, it was gonzo. We've had 21 sailors out and we've not seen hide nor hair of Mike Tammaro and a few others who have sailed in recent years.

December 10: The forecast was 15-25, but the reality was more like 8-12 with a few lulls below 8 and a few gusts above 12. It was sunny and warm. Quite a nice day for frostbiting. We had 17 boats out and 16 qualifiying for the day. The sequences of races is settling into a routine with an around-the-island, a port triangle, a port Harry Anderson, a starboard triangle, a downwind start, and a race out to the gong and finish at the club. Chuck won the day with Peter second and Kyle third. Doug won the consistency award going from 14th to first in the first two races.

December 17: The ProJo said 10-25 SW and for the early going it was gusting into the 20s. Gordon did a nosedive in the first race (first flip of the season), so we all went back to the dock to contemplate what to do next. The RC decided to make another go of it setting up slightly closer, but a handful of racers had had enough. Nevertheless, seven races were completed with a dozen racers participating. According to those who perservered, the blast we had in the first (aborted) race was the worst of it.

January 7: Another beautiful day with the temps in the 50s and the sun shining. Hardly seemed like frostbiting at all. The wind was light (5-8) out of the northeast (swinging all the way from the southwest early). Thirteen racers were out and the Patriots won without their support. Peter got a major hose job in the first race after leading and finished 8th, but never finished worse than second after that to win the day. Kyle had an excellent day for second and Laura took third a point behind Kyle.

We had our triangle right, triangle left, trapezoid, windward leeward, triangle right, and then the downwind start to the gong and back to the club. It was Peter, Chuck, and Kyle with the honors, but Mark also had a win. Wind was somewhat shifty, but there was a wicked outgoing current that dominated matters. January 28: It was a light air day, with puffs, shifts, and current. Laura figured out the best for the win, closely followed by Gordon and Peter. The last race was not typical, but sort of defined the day. We had a short downwind start that turned into an upwind leg halfway to the mark. Then we were to round Cornelius to port and finish at the club. Only trouble was that half way 'round the island we ran into heavy slush. Gordon saw us get stuck and found the "Northwest Passage" through the ice. The rest of us soldiered through it, finally getting to open water on the other side. Today marks the end of the Fall Series and next week the beginning of the Spring Series.

February 11: After a week off for Super Bowl Sunday (and cold windy weather), we got an auspicious start to the spring season. It looked very light to start from the north. There appeared to be a skim coat of ice near the breakwater (either that or perfectly flat conditions there). But by the time the racing started the wind did a 180 and was from the south. Neither the direction nor the speed settled down very much. It was all over the place. Between races there was a gust well into the teens, but for the most part it was rather tame in the 5-8 range. We had 18 racers today and Chuck got three wins in six races. Laura continued to do well with a second (worst race two sevens), and Time came in third with a pair of deuces.

We used the green can by the club as weather mark in the west wind. Triangle right, triangle left, four marks, downwind LW, four marks, triangle left to the gong and back to the club. There were plenty of shifts and gusts to keep people honest. Joe Mello picked up two wins in the last two races for second, but Tim had three firsts and a win for the day. Peter had no worse than a three for third. Nelson caught a lucky shift in race 2 for the sixth bullet. We started with 15 boats, but three broke down and did not receive scores.

February 25: The ProJo gave a forecast of 25-35 from the NW. The actuality was 1-5 from the SE switching to the NE. So much for forecasts. The ice floes were so thick that you could not sail through them, but Hans steered clear of them for the most part. We got in six short races, some just up and back to a mark not too far away. The wind on the water, or lack of same, sometimes was not what the ribbons at the top of the masts were showing. Peter won the day, with Laura second, and Tim third.

March 11: Yes, Virginia, we had wind. It blew an average of 14-16 with gusts well above that from the WNW. The scoring is complicated, but by the book (see our rules 2, 3, and 4 on the scoring page). We discounted the races where the RC left their station to pick up flips, but counted the "round-the-island" race because they were there to start and finish the race even though they picked up a boat along the way. Eight boats qualified for the day because they sailed three of four races. Another nine completed only two of the four races, so their results do not count (Ike, Gordon, Gary, TimB, Nelson, Dave, Walt, Chris, and Jack). Chuck distinguished himself by flipping before the racing started and Bob by flipping a race he'd been leading. Walt had a daily double. As for Chuck, I've never seen anyone swim so fast to get aboard another Sea Dog. Chuck won followed by Laura and Neil.

March 25: Let's see. What could be said about today? The paper called for 10-20 knots and Chuck, TimB, and Jack were the committee. Nobody broke down and nobody capsized. And, oh yes, it was a marathon. We got in 9 races and the last boat arrived at the dock at 4:15 p.m. so there was a healthy 3+ hours of racing. A tour de force in about 5-14 knots. There was a mad dash for the restrooms at the end (Chuck had been handing out beer from the committee boat). There was the race around Cornelius and Rabbit. There were two downwind starts. There was the race around the gong. And there were races in which two boats sailing not 30 yards apart were sailing upwind and downwind at the same time. Morgan won the marathon with 26 points (which could be his dropout). 'Nuff said.

April 1: It was overcast, but the wind was steady (little in the way of gusts or shifts) from the SE. Chuck again did RC (with Ike and Lou) and we sailed 7 races. TimD was the most consistent and won the day even though he only won one race on the day.
