November 13: Wind was gusty out of the South at 12-18 knots. As Chuck said, "I was hoping for a little less wind on the first day." We had three flips. Nelson got it started before the first race and was pulled out of the drink by Mike and Hans. Gordon had it going in the first race and won the start and kept it going wire to wire. Then Mike and Hans got fancy with a two jibe course and put Gordon and Mark Winslow in the water at the same time. But after that people got their bearings and sailed clean in the difficult conditions. Skip Whyte was out in his IC and gave out some pointers at the end of the day. The gear took a beating and we're looking forward to more boats next week. Amost forgot -- Bob Hicks won the day! Keep it going super.

November 20: What a beautiful day for racing. Temps were in the 60s with clear skies and the wind averaged right around 10 knots from the south. Hans and Lou held down the fort as RC aboard Sundance. We had 11 racers. The wind was shifty, with 30 degree shifts being the rule rather than the exception. In the first race Tim and Chuck and Nelson headed to the right on the headed board and got poor marks. That WL was won by Paul. Then we had a port triangle (left still better) and Pete won. Then we did the zigzag around Chuck's Ensign. Chuck won. Then we did a zigzage followed by WL. Nelson had only a couple behind him at the first leeward, but he went right and benefitted from a right shift and rounded the second weather in first and then held on. In the last race, we did the Gong show and Tim became the fifth winner in five races. Peter was most consistent and won the day.

November 27: Overcast skies, warm temps, wind light (6-8) from the NE then NW. Not a bad day for the lightweights. Hans and Lou set a WL to start and then three starboard triangles to different marks and then the famous downwind start. Today it went Tim, Neil, Peter, Peter, and Bob, but Chuck won the day with his four duces (despite the light air, which he hates). The secret today was playing the incoming current. We had two general recalls when the current was pushing us over the line.

December 4: It was REAL frostbite weather today. A dusting of snow on the ground, temps in the high twenties and (well you can't have everything) some sleet. The wind was out of the north at 7-10 with some mild gusts and shifts and an ebbing tide. Hans and Mike and Walt were the RC. It was a WL, then port triangle with WL, then a Z, then a starboard triangle with WL, then the dreaded downwind start and out to the gong. Pete was on fire today with some great (he said "lucky") starts and got the daily win. Morgan was finding the shifts and had no worse than fourth on the day for a second. Paul Nannig was pretty quick and smart and had a win in the fourth race and finished third on the day.

December 11: We're on a roll. It was another great sailing day. Today it blew 7-10 knots from the S-SW with frequent shifts. If you were in phase, you could make tremendous gains. Pete was the most in phase with three bullets in races 2 to 4. Tim got the other two for second and Rollie sneaked in with third. Hans and Lou ran the show. Starboard triangle, then with a WL added, port triangle, downwind start LW, and then around the island. Good stuff.

December 18: What a Fall Season! We had six glorious sailing days out of six opportunities. Today the predicted 5-10 out of the NW, but as it turned out it was 5-10 out of the S to W, mostly SW and with a ripping current going out. Yes, it was puffy and shifty but the boats kept moving. Hans and Lou and TimB manned the RC boat (the Queen back in service). After a few false starts and a course resetting to the south, the first race went off as a starboard triangle. After some Zs and a downwind start, the most interesting race was out to the gong. Tim and Nelson and Chuck got to the gong first and headed back in and tried to stay out of the current on the north side. But the wind shifted hard left and the guys in the current sailed past us with Peter leading the way. Peter got three bullets, won the day, and won the series. Next races are for the Hangover Bowl on New Years Day. Same bat time, same bat channel.

January 1: Happy New Year. The year started as it ended with great frostbiting weather. It was about 7-10 knots from the NE on average. Whenever we reset the pin the wind would shift to either the E or the N. The current was going out strong at the start of racing and pushed us back off the line. The wind died for the fourth race and Hans and Lou in their wisdom gave us a leeward and return, which is always something that the racers love. Pete won the Hangover Bowl with Tim second and Chuck third. Paul came up strong for the last race and won at the Club.

January 8: The Spring season started as the Fall season closed, with good sailing weather. It started out from the SW and moved more westerly as the day went on. Hans and Lou sent us on a starboard triangle around Cornelius Island for the first race. Then we had various shorter WL and Triangles, ending with a tour out to the gong and back to the Club. We finished up the day with pizza and beer and wine and cookies. Watched the end of the Giants defeat at the hands of Carolina and the beginning of the Pittsburgh victory over Cincy. Oh, and Peter won the day with Tim second and Paul third.

January 29: Good to be back from that sweltering Key West for another exciting day of racing. The wind was challenging. It had pressure and direction changes in very local areas. If you got caught in a lull, it was deadly. Keep your heads out of the boat! Hans had help from Lou and Mike today. The courses were mostly run to the SE with starboard roundings, but for the last we went to a "white buoy" up under the lighthouse, then around the gong, and then home. Peter won the tiebreaker for first and we had a long and fruitful discussion of the rules. For an analysis click here.

February 5: Let me tell you the kind of day it was on Superbowl Sunday. Two sailors came down and never rigged their boats (Rollie and Geoff). Three sailors rigged, but never went out (Peter, Ike, and Walt). One went out and came back (Nelson). Two went out and broke down (Kyle and Bob). One went out and capsized while leading the last race (Gordon). And five raced without major incident. It started out heavy and gusty and let up a little bit by the time six short races were completed. The six who sailed the races got to to around Rabbit island in the fifth and Cornelius in the sixth. Geoff and Lou manned the Queen while Hans and Mike did RC in Sundance. They finished long before the Superbowl was scheduled to start. Tim won every race. Since my program does not handle six, I've made the executive level decision to count the first race as a "practice race."

Tricky all the way around. Bob had a challenging day with a capsize, getting rammed on port by a starboard tacker and then losing his mast step in the last race. That last was another challenge going downwind for the start, green can to port, gong to port and finish at the club. And for good measure we had one up the channel.
